P&G brings back old CEO to jump-start growth: this week in the economy

Procter & Gamble turns to former CEO Lafley to try to improve growth, especially in fast-growing emerging markets. Also this week, extended jobless claims hit post-recession lows, durable goods pick up, and Ben Bernanke speaks to Congress.?

A.G. Lafley, shown here speaking in New York in 2010, retakes the reins of Procter & Gamble Co., effective immediately, after the sudden retirement of current chief executive Bob McDonald. Mr. Lafley led the household products giant from 2000 to 2009.

P&G brings back former CEO:?If the current chief executive officer isn't working out, why not bring back the former guy? That's the strategy Procter?& Gamble Co. is using, announcing Thursday that former CEO A.G. Lafley would take the reins of the maker of Tide, Crest, Pampers, and other household products. He replaces CEO Bob McDonald, who will retire June 30.

Although it has a commanding presence in US households, P&G has struggled to grow sales in emerging markets overseas ? a strategy that Mr. Lafley himself initiated before he retired in 2009. The sudden leadership move may have more to do with morale than strategy. Known as a charismatic leader, Lafley told the Associated Press that he would continue the company's strategic course, which has reaped some results recently by cutting costs, introducing new products, and focusing on core developed markets as well as developing ones.

On Friday, the day after the announcement, P&G's stock jumped up 4 percent.

Jobless claims get back on track: Following an unexpected rise two weeks ago, the number of people applying for unemployment benefits dropped by 23,000 to 340,000 claims last week, according to the Labor Department. Continuing claims, meanwhile, fell to 2,912,000 from 3,024,000 from the week before, their lowest level since 2008. ?Continuing?claims?have been steadily improving in recent months and now stand 11.7% below year-ago levels,? Barclays Research economist Cooper Howes wrote in an e-mailed analysis. ?This week?s data cover the survey week for the May BLS employment report and, in our view, suggest that the separation side of the labor market has improved since April.?

Durable goods on the rise: According to the Commerce Department, orders for durable goods from manufacturers jumped by 3.3 percent ($7.15 billion) in April, far exceeding analysts? expectations. Most of that increase ($5.09 billion) was in orders for transportation equipment. Also, orders for vehicles increased 1.9 percent. Aircraft orders rebounded as well, by 26 percent. The only dim spot in the report was shipping of durable goods, down by 0.6 percent.

?We are probably in for another month or two of declining shipments during the spring,? Paul Edelstein, director of financial economics at IHSGlobal Insight, wrote via e-mail analysis. ?But if orders continue on their current pace, shipments should rebound in the summer. But clearly, the mini-boom in manufacturing over the previous two quarters is over, and the sector is settling into a softer growth trajectory that is more consistent with the overall economy.??

Bernanke goes to Congress: Federal Reserve chief Ben Bernanke testified before Congress?s Joint Economic Committee Wednesday. In wide-ranging remarks, he warned that withdrawing Fed stimulus too soon could stall economic recovery. The Fed chief pointed to fiscal policies as a drag on growth ? ?In particular the expiration of the payroll tax cut, the enactment of tax increases, the effects of the budget caps on discretionary spending, the onset of sequestration, and the declines in defense spending for overseas military operations are expected, collectively, to exert a substantial drag on the economy this year,? he said.

Things get worse Abercrombie & Fitch.? On the heels of the controversy surrounding the apparel brand?s exclusion of plus-sized customers, Abercrombie & Fitch posted dismal financial numbers for the first quarter, with same-store sales plunging 15 percent. Abercrombie stock fell 10 percent on the news.? CEO Mike Jeffries blamed most of the loss on inventory shortages.?

Call on Sally Draper for more 'Mad Men' truth

TV

Sally Draper finally said to her dad, Don, what all of us have been thinking for six seasons of "Mad Men." It came at the tail end of last Sunday's episode -- an episode already jammed with noteworthy scenes and dialogue.

After being left alone with her two little brothers in Don and Megan's apartment, Sally confronts a burglar during the night. The older black woman convinces Sally that she is her "grandmother," that she raised Don and that he invited her to his home. Sally is skeptical, but the lady still gets away with robbing the place.

"She said she knew you," Sally says to her father on the phone a day later. "I asked her everything I know and she had an answer for everything. Then I realized I don?t know anything about you."

Image: Sally and Don Draper on 'Mad Men"

AMC

Welcome to the club, Sally. No one on the show really knows anything about Don. But what we do know is that Sally Draper's transition into her teen years is a welcome step for the character played by Kiernan Shipka.

Half the time we can't even remember the names of Sally's two brothers or whether they are the same kids every week, but Sally is a mainstay, and how she copes with her fractured family going forward could prove interesting.

Image: "Mad Men" intruder

Another phone call gone wrong: "Grandma Ida" calls off the police after Sally and Bobby Draper find her in their dad's apartment.

Will Sally become a hippie flower child of the 1970s, protesting the remaining years of the Vietnam War? Is there any hope that she can have any kind of meaningful relationship with her mother, Betty? Will she dig deeper into her father's secrets, and if so, how will Don react?

The phone call at the end of the May 19 episode was a great juxtaposition to the call Don took at the start of the episode from his latest mistress, Sylvia. That call ended with Don whipping his phone into the office cocktail cart. The call from Sally ended with Don stunned silent by his daughter.

"We really wanted to show that Sally Draper doesn't know anything about her father," show creator Matthew Weiner says in a behind-the-scenes video from AMC. "These children are not being parented at all. That phone call at the end was really supposed to codify the episode as this big mystery being answered, but not being answered at all."

For now, let's hope Sally keeps talking. Soon or later it won't render Don speechless -- or at least semi-mute as he's been all season -- and fans of "Mad Men" could be witness to a meaningful dialogue.

Photonic quantum computers: A brighter future than ever

May 13, 2013 ? Harnessing the unique features of the quantum world promises a dramatic speed-up in information processing as compared to the fastest classical machines. Scientists from the Group of Philip Walther from the Faculty of Physics, University of Vienna succeeded in prototyping a new and highly resource efficient model of a quantum computer -- the boson sampling computer.

The results will be published in the upcoming issue of the scientific journal Nature Photonics.

Quantum computers work by manipulating quantum objects as, for example, individual photons, electrons or atoms and by harnessing the unique quantum features. Not only do quantum computers promise a dramatic increase in speed over classical computers in a variety of computational tasks; they are designed to complete tasks that even a supercomputer would not be able to handle. Although, in recent years, there has been a rapid development in quantum technology the realization of a full-sized quantum computer is still very challenging. While it is still an exciting open question which architecture and quantum objects will finally lead to the outperformance of conventional supercomputers, current experiments show that some quantum objects are better suited than others for particular computational tasks.

The computational power of photons

The huge advantage of photons -- a particular type of bosons -- lies in their high mobility. The research team from the University of Vienna in collaboration with scientist from the University of Jena (Germany) has recently realized a so-called boson sampling computer that utilizes precisely this feature of photons. They inserted photons into a complex optical network where they could propagate along many different paths. "According to the laws of quantum physics, the photons seem to take all possible paths at the same time. This is known as superposition. Amazingly, one can record the outcome of the computation rather trivially: one measures how many photons exit in which output of the network," explains Philip Walther from the Faculty of Physics.

How to beat a supercomputer

A classical computer relies on an exact description of the optical network to calculate the propagation of the photons through this circuit. For a few dozen photons and an optical network with merely a hundred inputs and outputs, even today's fastest classical supercomputer is unable to calculate the propagation of the photons. However, for a boson sampling computer this ambitious task is within reach. The researchers met the challenge and built their prototype based on a theoretical proposal by scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA). "It is crucial to verify the operation of a boson-sampling computer by comparing its outcome with the predictions of quantum physics. Ironically, this test can only be performed on a classical computer. Fortunately, for small enough systems classical computers are still able to accomplish this," as Max Tillmann, first author of the publication, points out. Thus, the researchers successfully showed that their realization of the boson-sampling computer works with high precision. These encouraging results may lead the way to the first outperformance of classical computers in the not-so-far future.

Is Paul Heyman scouting a third client?

Might there be another Paul Heyman guy waiting in the wings?

While CM Punk languishes in self-imposed exile and Brock Lesnar prepares to battle Triple H inside a steel cage, rumors have begun swirling that the mad scientist is looking to expand his ranks, and actively scouting for a third client inside the WWE locker room. The rumors are admittedly just that at this point, but the WWE Superstars and Divas are still abuzz over the possibility of Heyman's ranks increasing by one.

Despite Heyman's firebrand reputation, it would appear there is no shortage of Superstars clamoring for his representation, which makes sense given the visibility an association with the mad scientist brings.

?Would I like to be represented by Paul Heyman? Of course,? said NXT Superstar Corey Graves. ?It doesn?t mean you?re gonna be liked. You?re not gonna make any friends ? but you can?t deny that if you?re a Paul Heyman guy, the world?s going to talk about you.?

United States Champion Kofi Kingston also weighed in with a response that some may find a bit surprising. ?I think anyone who is not interested in having Paul Heyman as a representative would be foolish. Look at his track record and what he?s done for guys like Brock Lesnar. You see how much of an asset he?s been for CM Punk. [Heyman] is a genius.?

Others are more wary than anything over the potential growth of Heyman's cult of personality. Take the recently returned Miz, for example. ?What?s in it for me? I?ll answer a question with a question, because while Heyman definitely has something to offer, I just don?t know what he has to offer to me.?

As for Paul Heyman himself, he responded with an uncharacteristic silence when pressed for comment. Third man or not, it would appear he has the WWE Universe talking regardless ? which, of course, is just the way he likes it.

Obama vows action on 'outrageous' abuse

President Barack Obama said Monday that he first learned the IRS may have improperly targeted conservative political groups when the news broke late last week and vowed action if charges of "outrageous" political bias turn out to be true.

If Internal Revenue Service officials improperly examined the tax-exempt status of groups with conservative leanings, "then that?s outrageous, and there?s no place for it, and they have to be held fully accountable," Obama said during a joint question-and-answer session with British Prime Minister David Cameron in the East Room in the White House.

But Obama emphasized that an investigation was underway and that he did not want to rush to judgment.

"You don?t want the IRS ever being perceived to be biased and anything less than neutral in how they operate," the president said. The IRS must have "absolute integrity."

Obama's strong words followed an outcry from many Republicans over the IRS's apparent display of political bias. Maine Sen. Susan Collins, a GOP moderate, said Sunday that the IRS?s actions needed to be ?personally condemned? by the president, who must ?make crystal clear that this is totally unacceptable.?

Collins also called into question the IRS?s early claim that the improper behavior was the work of low-level employees.

"I just don't buy that this was a couple of rogue IRS employees," she said, underlining that "groups with 'progressive' in their names were not targeted similarly."

Obama also pushed back hard against Republican-driven charges that his administration tried to cover up the role terrorists played in the Sept. 11, 2012, attack in the eastern Libyan city of Benghazi, which claimed the lives of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.

"There's no there, there," he said.

The Rising

Hello and welcome to The Rising, a roleplay that makes us think outside of normal society lines. No reservations are needed and all roles are welcome. I will be creating three characters, a family of a father and his daughter and son. The father will be the leader of the rebellion but other roles as an authoritative role are available, although personally I prefer you ask before assuming a role.
The daughter I intend to have captured in the detention centers, and the first mission of the Rebels is to rescue the daughter and what inmates they can.

Much looking forward, I hope this Roleplay can catch some people's interest.

16 New Smartphones by Samsung in 1st Trimester as Battle for Bigger Market Share with Apple Heats Up

Despite the favourable reviews of new smartphones such as the HTC One, Sony Xperia and Nokia Lumia 920 as well as tablets such as the Surface Pro, the smartphone and tablet market remains largely a battleground between Samsung and Apple.

The latest report showed that Apple was gaining more ground in the smartphone market for Q1 2013 at its market share went up 2.7 per cent to 39 per cent. Rival Samsung logged a smaller 0.7 per cent growth in the last quarter, but other tech firms such as HTC, Motorola and LG suffered cuts in market share by 0.8 per cent, 0.6 per cent and 0.3 per cent, respectively.

The South Korean tech giant, however, is not letting Apple gain the upper hand when it has stolen the smartphone crown. To ensure it got a significant cut of the pie, Samsung released 16 phones during the first four months of the year, led by its flagship, Samsung Galaxy S4.

The releases include phablets. Techies, though, note that many of the phones released by Samsung are very similar to one another. That strategy is a complete opposite from Apple's which only releases one new smartphone a year and one iPad refresh.

ZDNET said the lack of differentiation in Samsung handsets reflects its approach to the global business that making unique units for different regions is not worth the extra investment in software.

Here is the list of Samsung's phone releases for the first trimester and their screen sizes.

  • Galaxy Note 8 (8 inches)
  • Galaxy Tab 3 (7 inches)
  • Galaxy Mega 6.3 (6.3 inches)
  • Galaxy Mega 5.8 (5.8 inches)
  • Galaxy S4 (5 inches)

  • Galaxy Win (4.7 inches)
  • Galaxy Express (4.5 inches)
  • Galaxy XCover 2 (4 inches)
  • Galaxy Fame (3.5 inches)

  • REX 90 (3.5 inches)
  • Galaxy Young (3.27 inches)
  • Galaxy Star (3 inches)
  • Galaxy Pocket Neo (3 inches)
  • REX 70 (3 inches)

  • REX 80 (3 inches)

Indian government launches Central Monitoring System, watches the peoples' calls, emails and internet activity

A new system for monitoring almost everything that's going on inside India's telecoms network has been quietly launched. The Central Monitoring System will offer tax collectors, law enforcement and and other agencies the ability to scrutinize phone calls, text messages, emails, social networking and general web activity. In one of the fastest-growing internet markets in the world, the Indian government has been increasing its role in watching communication channels following the Mumbai bombings in 2008, with laws amended both in that year and in 2011, increasing the access of government workers for "reasonable security practices and procedures."

In recent times, India has interfered with both Nokia and BlackBerry to ensure they had their own monitoring systems in place. The new country-wide system has been under construction for two years and offers investigative agencies a single point of access to all citizens' digital exchanges as well as location data. Pavan Duggal, a specialist in cyberlaw told the Times of India that the system is "capable of tremendous abuse." He noted that there wasn't much clarity from the government yet on exactly what it intends to monitor, or what it's looking for.

Senate passes bill allowing online sales tax

By Kim Dixon and Patrick Temple-West

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Senate voted overwhelmingly on Monday to give states the power to enforce their sales tax laws on online purchases, but the legislation faces a tougher fight in the Republican-controlled House of Representatives.

The Democratic-controlled Senate voted 69 to 27 to back the measure, which pits brick-and-mortar stores like Wal-Mart Stores Inc and cash-hungry state governments against such Web retailers as eBay Inc and Republicans wary of new tax measures.

"Call me a conservative, but I believe the right approach to tax fairness is to reduce rates ? not force higher rates onto others," said Tom Graves, a House Republican from Georgia.

House Speaker John Boehner plans to send the bill to the House Judiciary Committee, a senior Republican aide said. That will mean hearings ahead. The Senate uncharacteristically bypassed this step.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Robert Goodlatte, a Republican, has reservations about the legislation, including its complexity and potential impact on small businesses, a spokeswoman said.

Goodlatte has yet to schedule any hearings on it, she said.

Backers of the measure include major traditional retailers Wal-Mart and Best Buy Co Inc, as well as e-tailing giant Amazon.com Inc, which wants to simplify its U.S. state sales tax payments.

Opponents include many other online merchants such as eBay, Overstock.com Inc and anti-tax activist Grover Norquist. Lawmakers from states without sales taxes - like Montana, Oregon and New Hampshire - largely oppose the measure.

States that charge sales tax have largely been unable to require e-tailers to collect it from purchasers unless the e-tailer had a physical presence in the state. Otherwise, consumers are supposed to pay the tax, but very few do.

Some states have made separate arrangements with Amazon on the issue, while others have not.

The bill would let states require out-of-state retailers to collect sales tax on purchases made over the Internet, even if the e-tailer has no physical presence in the purchaser's state.

The bill would allow states to do this but not require them to do so. It would also exempt merchants with online annual out-of-state sales of $1 million or less.

"We place a 30 percent probability that the bill is signed into law by the end of the year" primarily due to opposition in the House, said Guggenheim Securities analyst Chris Krueger.

"Our odds will increase following passage of this bill in the Senate provided it receives a big vote of support," he said.

The online sales tax bill debate is moving on a separate track from efforts in Congress on a broader tax overhaul.

The main obstacle on that front remains the dispute between Republicans who refuse to consider new federal revenue from ending tax breaks that would be part of tax reform, and Democrats who insist that such new revenue is vital.

Few Tips To Make Your Internet Marketing Strategies Work ? Hot ...

Statistics say that 90% of traditional businesses fail within their first 12 months of business. Those stats are higher with online businesses considering that is easier to start an online business. In this article you?ll find some helpful advice on how to avoid being part of the 90% and actually experience some success.

In order to have a successful business you have to understand that client satisfaction is crucial. If you are selling good and services online you must provide detailed info to your potential customers. For example having a FAQ section in your site will increase conversions because you will answer people?s questions right off the bat.

In order to achieve success in this internet marketing industry you must learn to be creative and unique when it comes to marketing your business. Don?t simply copy and paste what other people are using. Be innovative with your business, create a site no one else is using. If you can make your site unique from the others then people will notice and actually listen to what you have to say.

If you?re going to use banners on your website, use ones that don?t look like the typical banners you see elsewhere. Make them look as if they are links that can be clicked in order to get to more content. Most people tend to avoid banners, so this approach will help entice them.

Your site also needs to be in a well balanced order. For example if your site has too many ads, pictures and videos it will be very hard for visitors to find information fast. The structured of your site is important because everything needs to be in an order that visitors can know about your products or services in less than 3 minutes. You don?t want to lose customers because of this.

If you can follow these tips to the letter then you will see that your business will improve. In the end having a successful business is all about learning, implementing and changing all the time.

Experts Shoot Down Speculation That Spider Bite Led to Guitarist's Death

Slayer co-founder Jeff Hanneman's death from liver failure on Thursday is still something of a mystery, but that hasn't stopped fans from speculating as to why his liver failed when he was only 49. One of the more dramatic theories making the rounds on Twitter and in the media is that it was a spider bite two years ago that led to an infection and ultimately to his death.

Not so, say experts.

The spider bite was alleged to have happened in 2011. It was then that Hannemen had been sidelined from performing after contracting necrotizing fasciitis, commonly called the "flesh-eating" bacteria.

But doctors say it's unlikely that such a past infection would have directly led to liver failure -- and his assumed spider bite might never have occurred. (Slayer spokeswoman Heidi Robinson-Fitzgerald said the band was not currently releasing more information on Hannemen's health and was consulting with a doctor to determine what could have led to his liver failure.)

Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert and chair of Preventive Medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, said that in spite of Hannemen's injuries from the infection -- physical therapy and operations on his arm -- the original infection would not have lasted this long.

'Nathan for You': Unconventional Business Advice Watch Video

Hannemen first contracted the infection after a friend's hot tub in the Inland Empire region of California. He felt what he thought was a spider bite, although he didn't see the insect. His wound quickly worsened, Hanneman went to seek medical help, and doctors diagnosed him with necrotizing fasciitis. The disease is a bacterial infection that destroys the body's soft tissue.

The effects were so devastating for the guitarist that he was only able to perform with Slayer once before his death, when he played two songs during a 2011 concert.

"He was still working to regain dexterity needed," said Slayer spokeswoman Heidi Robinson-Fitzgerald of Hanneman."If [Slayer] had played slow songs, he could have done it."

Although Hannemen's type of injury led him to believe that the infection was the result of an untreated bite from a brown recluse spider, insect experts say that is unlikely. Brown recluse spiders, also called the violin spider, are found almost exclusively in the Midwest and the South.

Dr. Doug Yanega, senior museum scientist at the Entomology Research Museum at the University of California-Riverside, said virtually all sightings of the brown recluse spider in Southern California were related to someone having accidentally transported the dangerous insect into the area.

Recluse spiders usually avoid humans when people are active, added Yanega. They're more likely to be bitten when they're sleeping and the spider can move without feeling threatened.

"They're named recluses for a reason, they don't come out," said Yanega. "If he was up and about and walking around, it was unlikely to be a spider bite."

Yanega said another possibility is that Hanneman was bitten by a Chilean recluse spider, which has been reported in the Los Angeles area and can cause a similar reaction to that from the brown recluse. But, Yanega said, confirmed reports of people suffering bites from Chilean recluse spiders were also extremely rare.

"The odds are so slim. There are so many other things that cause the same symptoms," said Yanega. "That's one of the most unlikely things it could be."

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Thousands of people with serious medical problems are in danger of losing coverage under President Barack Obama's health care overhaul because of cost overruns, state officials say.

At risk is the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan, a transition program that's become a lifeline for the so-called uninsurables ? people with serious medical conditions who can't get coverage elsewhere. The program helps bridge the gap for those patients until next year, when under the new law insurance companies will be required to accept people regardless of their medical problems.

In a letter this week to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, state officials said they were "blindsided" and "very disappointed" by a federal proposal they contend would shift the risk for cost overruns to states in the waning days of the program. About 100,000 people are currently covered.

"We are concerned about what will become of our high risk members' access to this decent and affordable coverage," wrote Michael Keough, chairman of the National Association of State Comprehensive Health Insurance Plans. States and local nonprofits administer the program in 27 states, and the federal government runs the remaining plans.

"We fear...catastrophic disruption of coverage for these vulnerable individuals," added Keough, who runs North Carolina's program. He warned of "large-scale enrollee terminations at this critical transition time."

The crisis is surfacing at a politically awkward time for the Obama administration, which is trying to persuade states to embrace a major expansion of Medicaid under the health care law. One of the main arguments proponents of the expansion are making is that Washington is a reliable financial partner.

The root of the problem is that the federal health care law capped spending on the program at $5 billion, and the money is running out because the beneficiaries turned out to be costlier to care for than expected. Advanced heart disease and cancer are common diagnoses for the group.

Obama did not ask for any additional funding for the program in his latest budget, and a Republican bid to keep the program going by tapping other funds in the health care law failed to win support in the House last week.

Brian Cook, a spokesman for the HHS agency overseeing the health care law, took issue with idea that thousands of people could lose coverage, though he did not elaborate.

"These actions are part of our careful management of the program to ensure that there is a seamless transition ... for enrollees, and that funding is spent appropriately," he said in a written statement.

The administration has given the state-based plans until next Wednesday to respond to proposed contract terms for the program's remaining seven months.

Delivered last Friday, the new contract stipulated that states will be reimbursed "up to a ceiling."

"The 'ceiling' part is the issue for us," Keough said in an interview. "They are shifting the risk from the federal government, for a program that has experienced huge cost overruns on a per-member basis, to states. And that's a tall order."

State officials say one likely consequence of the money crunch will be a cost shift to people in the program, resulting in sudden increases in premiums and copayments. Many might just drop out, said Keough.

If a state and HHS can't come to an agreement, the federal government will take over that state's program for the rest of this year. Amie Goldman, director of the Wisconsin program, said that would be an unneeded and possibly risky disruption for patients who'll have to change insurance next year anyway, when the pre-existing conditions plan formally ends.

Goldman said in her state, for example, the University of Wisconsin hospital isn't part of the federal government's provider network. "My colleagues in other states have similar concerns about holes in the network," she said. "I think it puts people at medical risk."

At his news conference this week, Obama acknowledged the rollout of his health care law wouldn't be perfect. There will be "glitches and bumps" he said, and his team is committed to working through them. However, it's unclear how the pre-existing conditions plan could get more money without the cooperation of Republicans in Congress.

The program got off to a slow start, partly because insurance isn't cheap. It offers policies at market rates, and that can mean premiums of $500 a month for someone in their 50s. The first inkling of financial problems came in February, when HHS announced a freeze on new applications.

The plan was intended only as a stopgap until the law's main push to cover the uninsured starts next year. Subsidized private insurance will be available through new state-based markets, as well as an expanded version of Medicaid for low-income people. At the same time, virtually all Americans will be required to carry a policy, or pay a fine.

States are free to accept or reject the Medicaid expansion, and the new problems with the stopgap insurance plan could well have a bearing on their decisions.

Solar plane lands in Phoenix

A plane powered only by the Sun has completed the first leg of a journey that aims to cross the US.

Solar Impulse, as the vehicle is known, took off at dawn from San Francisco, California, on Friday and landed in Phoenix, Arizona, some 18 hours later.

The craft will stop over in Dallas, St Louis, Washington DC and New York in the coming weeks.

The plane has the same wingspan as an Airbus A340 but it weighs just 1.6 tonnes.

It has already made a day-and-night flight lasting more than 26 hours, and the team aims to eventually circumnavigate the globe in 2015.

The plane took off from Moffett Field on the edge of San Francisco Bay at 06:12 local time (13:12 GMT) on Friday, and landed at Phoenix's Sky Harbor Airport at 00:30 local time (07:30 GMT) on Saturday.

This meant Solar Impulse spent several hours flying in darkness, relying solely on the energy stored in an array of lithium-ion batteries to drive its propellers.

In daylight hours, these are charged by nearly 12,000 solar cells that cover the craft's wings and stabiliser.

The Solar Impulse HB-SIA

  • Wingspan - 63m (208ft)
  • Weight - 1,600kg (3,500lb)
  • Covered with 11,628 solar cells
  • Carries 400kg (900lb) of lithium-ion batteries
  • Maximum cruising altitude of 8,500m (28,000ft)

The HB-SIA craft was piloted by Bertrand Piccard, a co-founder of the effort, who is perhaps best known for being the first person to circumnavigate the globe in a hot-air balloon, in 1999.

The trans-America bid is the first attempt of its kind with a zero-fuel aircraft.

Together with co-founder and entrepreneur Andre Borschberg, the pair of Swiss pilots have racked up a number of world records and milestones in recent years.

The first night flight of a solar-powered craft in 2010 was followed by a first international flight in 2011, and first inter-continental flight in 2012.

The two will share the job of flying the plane between each of the stops of the tour.

"We've been preparing for this flight since last summer, so we are all very excited," Mr Borschberg told BBC News.

The current aircraft HB-SIA is effectively the prototype for the craft that will eventually be used for transoceanic flights and the round-the-world trip. The HB-SIB should be completed by the end of 2013.

"You should see this like being in 1915 when the pioneers were trying to do these first cross-country flights - still unable to cross the ocean, but an important step for the development of aviation," Mr Borschberg said.

The launch on Friday served as the start of the pair's Clean Generation Initiative, an effort to encourage policy-makers and businesses to develop and adopt sustainable energy technologies.

"We want to show that with clean technologies, a passionate team and a far-reaching pioneering vision, one can achieve the impossible," Dr Piccard said at the announcement of the mission in March.

Ted Cruz loses another Republican columnist

May 1 (Reuters) - Orb was installed as the early favorite for Saturday's 139th Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs despite landing one of the widest barriers at Wednesday's post position draw. Unfazed by the wide gate, oddsmakers posted the three-year-old, who won last month's Florida Derby, at the top of the betting charts at 7-2. "I'd love to be the favorite," Orb's trainer Shug McGaughey told reporters after the colt's morning gallop. "I wish every one of my horses was favorite. They're not all going to win, I understand that, but I'm on board with that. ...

Dow, S&P 500 close at record levels after jobs report

By Ryan Vlastelica

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The Dow and S&P 500 advanced to all-time closing highs on Friday, with major indexes jumping 1 percent after an unexpectedly strong April jobs report eased concerns about an economic slowdown.

The S&P closed above 1,600 and the Dow briefly traded above 15,000 for the first time as stocks extended this year's rally. Bellwether companies, including Chevron Corp , Boeing Co and Johnson & Johnson , reached 52-week highs.

The Russell 2000 <.rut> stock index of mid- and small cap companies also hit a record, confirming the broadness of the rally. About 70 percent of stocks on both the New York Stock Exchange and the Nasdaq ended in positive territory.

Non-farm payrolls rose by 165,000 last month and the unemployment rate fell to 7.5 percent, a four-year low, from 7.6 percent, the government said. In addition, hiring was much stronger than previously thought in February and March.

Investors welcomed the gains after weeks of disappointing data, including tepid manufacturing reports, that suggested the economic recovery was losing steam.

"We were all wringing our hands over the past month but this alleviates fears about a sharp spring slowdown," said Brad Sorensen, director of market and sector analysis at Charles Schwab in Denver.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> was up 140.61 points, or 0.95 percent, at 14,972.19. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> was up 16.63 points, or 1.04 percent, at 1,614.22. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.ixic> was up 38.01 points, or 1.14 percent, at 3,378.63.

Both the Dow and S&P ended at all-time closing highs. For the week, the Dow rose 1.8, the S&P gained 2 percent and the Nasdaq rose 3 percent in its biggest weekly climb since the first week of the year.

Sectors tied to the pace of economic growth and to commodity prices were among the strongest gainers. U.S. Steel Corp rose 6.3 percent to $18.14 while WPX Energy Inc was up 5 percent to $16.56. U.S. crude oil futures rose 1.5 percent to settle at $95.43 a barrel.

"Commodity stocks are outperforming with the jobs number alleviating fears over a slowdown," said Sorensen. "The group has pulled back over the past months and they got a bit overdone. There are still really good growth opportunities there."

Freeport McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc closed up 2.6 percent at $31.13, after prices of copper posted the biggest daily gain since late October 2011.

General Electric , up 1.1 percent at $22.57, led gains among industrials after it won approval to buy oilfield pump maker Lufkin Industries for about $3 billion. The deal will allow GE to sharply increase its presence in the market to extract oil and natural gas from shale.

Gilead Sciences shares rose 5.7 percent to $55.15 after reaching a record high of $56.35. The world's largest maker of branded HIV drugs reported a big rise in quarterly profit late on Thursday.

LinkedIn Corp shares fell 13 percent to $175.59 a day after the social network reported disappointing revenue forecasts.

Of the 404 companies in the S&P 500 that have reported earnings so far, 68.3 percent have beaten earnings expectations, but only 46.3 percent have reported revenue above expectations. Over the past four quarters, 67 percent of companies beat on earnings and 52 percent beat revenue estimates.

In other economic reports on Friday, U.S. factory orders fell sharply in March while the pace of growth in the vast U.S. services sector eased in April to the slowest pace in nine months.

About 6.33 billion shares changing hands on the New York Stock Exchange, the Nasdaq and NYSE MKT, below the daily average so far this year of about 6.36 billion shares.

Ford to break its yearly hybrid sales record in the US, seven months early

Ford Fusion Energi hands-on

When Ford's hybrid lineup has been rapidly expanding over the past year, it stands to reason that the company's sales in the category would take off like an eco-friendly rocket. They have, and faster than you'd expect: the automaker now says it should break its yearly record for US hybrid sales sometime in May, with just under 6,000 cars standing between its current 2013 figures and an all-time high of 35,496 hybrids in 2010. The company has also more clearly established itself as number two, climbing from an estimated three percent of the US hybrid market share last April to 18 percent this year. While Toyota is still the clear frontrunner at 58 percent, Ford is ahead of its Detroit-based rivals -- and when Prius sales are soft, the Japanese firm just might be nervous.
