Authorities outlined plans Friday to break up two sit-ins by supporters of deposed President Morsi, saying they would set up a cordon around the protest sites, and riot police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators threatening a TV complex. Morsi backers also showed their defiance by briefly setting up a third camp near the airport, but later folded their tents and left. (AP) ? An Egyptian police official called Saturday on supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi to abandon their protest sit-ins, saying it would pave the way for his Muslim Brotherhood to return to a normal role in the country's political process.

The nationally televised remarks by Interior Ministry spokesman Hany Abdel-Latif came as authorities announced plans to break up the two main Cairo sit-ins by erecting cordons to prevent people from entering them.

Morsi's backers, including his Muslim Brotherhood group, have vowed to continue protesting until he's reinstated. He was ousted in a military coup July 3 after several days of protests by millions who took to the street to demand his ouster.

Abdel-Latif promised the protesters they would be able to leave without being arrested if they had not committed any crimes. He offered protection and safe passage to those willing to leave the two main camps ? a large one outside the Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque in eastern Cairo and a smaller one near Cairo University's main campus in Giza.

"If you believe you are bringing victory to the Brotherhood, it is your safe and secure departure that will allow the Brotherhood to go back to its role in the political process," Abdel-Latif said.

He said that Islamist leaders at the sit-ins are controlling information and "brainwashing" the protesters into thinking the sit-ins are in defense of Islam.

The Interior Ministry said some of the sit-ins' organizers were involved in "killings, torture and abductions."

Last weekend, the Interior Ministry said 11 bodies were found near both protest sites, with some showing signs of torture.

The London-based rights group Amnesty International also said it had testimony of alleged killings and torture at the hands of Morsi supporters inside the sit-ins, including a witness who said he saw one man stabbed and another have his throat cut.

In a new allegation, Egypt's state news agency reported Saturday that a 25 year-old worker was detained and violently beaten at one of the sit-ins. It quoted a security official as saying that the young man was found late Friday near a military factory south of Cairo with severe bruises and injuries. He told police he was abducted two days ago by pro-Morsi protesters who were participating in a march after he criticized them.

There are fears of more bloodshed if the sit-ins are dispersed by force. Already more than 280 people have been killed in violence since Morsi's ouster. The bloodiest incident took place last week, when more than 80 pro-Morsi supporters were killed in clashes with police near the sit-in at Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque.

Billy Crystal talks 'Monsters University' (interview)

TORONTO, ON - SEPTEMBER 13: Filmmaker/ Actor Billy Bob Thornton arrives at the "Jayne Mansfield's Car" Premiere during the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival at the Roy Thomson Hall on September 13, 2012 in Toronto, Canada. (Photo by Jemal Countess/Getty Images) (Jemal Countess/Getty)

BEVERLY HILLS -- Oscar-winner Billy Bob Thornton has signed on to star in "Fargo," an FX limited series inspired by the 1996 film.

"Fargo," which begins production in the fall, presents an all-new crime story and will feature no characters from the film. Thornton will play Lorne Malvo, a "rootless, manipulative" man who meets a small town insurance salesman and sets him on a path of destruction. The character is in the same vein as the one Steve Buscemi played in the award-winning film.

"I think people are going to be entranced with that show," FX president and general manager John Landgraf told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour on Friday. "It's really it's own thing but also true to the spirit of the original."

"Fargo" will be executive produced by Joel and Ethan Coen, the brains behind the film. It will run for 10 episodes and will most likely air next spring.

David King: the world needs a 'moon landing' for solar energy

Britain's former chief scientist has challenged governments around the world to find a way of creating a ready flow of cheap solar power over the next 10 years to fight global warming.

Writing in the Financial Times today, Sir David King and co-author Richard Layard, the former founder-director of the London School of Economics' Centre for Economic Performance, warn a collective scientific effort of similar proportions to putting a man on the moon is needed to tackle climate change.

"To defeat the axis of powers the allies developed the atom bomb. When threatened in the cold war, the US sent a man to the moon," the authors write. "When threatened by global warming we surely need a similar effort to save the planet."

King and Layard suggest that by 2025 bulk solar electricity should be supplied commercially at an unsubsidised price on a 24-hour basis, with at least 1GW powering cities in the Americas, Europe and Asia.

The joint project would be open to all G20 countries, and funded either by a carbon tax or governments' research and development budgets. King and Layard say the cost for each country would be 0.05 per cent of annual GDP for 10 years.

"We need a concentrated effort on one source [of energy] that offers the clearest prospect of success," they say. "The collection of solar energy by photovoltaic cells becomes cheaper every day and is already nearly economic in sun-rich environments."

But King and Layard also highlight the need for investment in electricity storage in order to achieve the goal of providing constant solar power.

"This is a far more important issue than putting a man on the moon. It should attract as much attention - and, this time, the attention of every nation. Failure to solve this problem will affect every nation upon earth."

Google Play Edition smartphones start receiving Android 43

If you were wondering just how long it would take the Google Play Editions of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S 4 to get Android 4.3, we can now tell you: not long at all. Owners of both devices report that they're receiving over-the-air updates to the new OS. There isn't yet word of any GPE-specific additions, but we'll let you know if there are surprises in store.

Update: AnandTech has noticed a few GPE-specific changes. Most home screen icons appear larger, infrared now works on the HTC One, and Bluetooth-based internet tethering is now an option for the Galaxy S 4.

Phil Dawson discusses Weather.com, compares kicking to golf, and otherwise impresses in press conference

We break down Phil Dawson's press conference following practice. The man entertained us!

A few months back, the 49ers introduced their new kicker Phil Dawson, who took some questions from the media. In that session and a subsequent radio interview, it became clear that Phil Dawson brought a pretty good sense of humor to the table. When it comes to special teams players, they can be great to follow for one of two reasons: either they are incredibly awesome at their job, or they are a little quirky. Some bring both to the table.

In the case of Phil Dawson, we'll hope for the former when the season gets started, but for now, I can say with some certainty that he brings the funny. Here are a few tweets I sent out during his press conference:

Maybe it was just listening to it, or maybe I've just got some kind of weird special teams fetish, but I thought it was funny. One highlight not listed above was hearing his excitement about what free agency was like. Dawson was undrafted in 1998, and he mentioned how he always wondered if the coaches and front office liked him previously, or just figured he was good enough. This year, he was pursued by the 49ers, and he got a kick out of that.

The highlight from the above tweets had to be the random discussion of weather services on the Internet. Back in March, Dawson had said he would spend some time at Candlestick to get a little more prepared for the crazy weather there. Today he said he has made a few trips to the stadium. He does not think it can fully prepare him, but it does help him start to figure things out.

He mentioned several times during the press conference about his use of Weather.com, AccuWeather and WeatherBug. He would not reveal which of the three was most accurate in Cleveland, but he did say he would use all three again here in San Francisco.
