Authorities outlined plans Friday to break up two sit-ins by supporters of deposed President Morsi, saying they would set up a cordon around the protest sites, and riot police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators threatening a TV complex. Morsi backers also showed their defiance by briefly setting up a third camp near the airport, but later folded their tents and left. (AP) ? An Egyptian police official called Saturday on supporters of ousted President Mohammed Morsi to abandon their protest sit-ins, saying it would pave the way for his Muslim Brotherhood to return to a normal role in the country's political process.

The nationally televised remarks by Interior Ministry spokesman Hany Abdel-Latif came as authorities announced plans to break up the two main Cairo sit-ins by erecting cordons to prevent people from entering them.

Morsi's backers, including his Muslim Brotherhood group, have vowed to continue protesting until he's reinstated. He was ousted in a military coup July 3 after several days of protests by millions who took to the street to demand his ouster.

Abdel-Latif promised the protesters they would be able to leave without being arrested if they had not committed any crimes. He offered protection and safe passage to those willing to leave the two main camps ? a large one outside the Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque in eastern Cairo and a smaller one near Cairo University's main campus in Giza.

"If you believe you are bringing victory to the Brotherhood, it is your safe and secure departure that will allow the Brotherhood to go back to its role in the political process," Abdel-Latif said.

He said that Islamist leaders at the sit-ins are controlling information and "brainwashing" the protesters into thinking the sit-ins are in defense of Islam.

The Interior Ministry said some of the sit-ins' organizers were involved in "killings, torture and abductions."

Last weekend, the Interior Ministry said 11 bodies were found near both protest sites, with some showing signs of torture.

The London-based rights group Amnesty International also said it had testimony of alleged killings and torture at the hands of Morsi supporters inside the sit-ins, including a witness who said he saw one man stabbed and another have his throat cut.

In a new allegation, Egypt's state news agency reported Saturday that a 25 year-old worker was detained and violently beaten at one of the sit-ins. It quoted a security official as saying that the young man was found late Friday near a military factory south of Cairo with severe bruises and injuries. He told police he was abducted two days ago by pro-Morsi protesters who were participating in a march after he criticized them.

There are fears of more bloodshed if the sit-ins are dispersed by force. Already more than 280 people have been killed in violence since Morsi's ouster. The bloodiest incident took place last week, when more than 80 pro-Morsi supporters were killed in clashes with police near the sit-in at Rabaah al-Adawiya Mosque.

Billy Crystal talks 'Monsters University' (interview)

TORONTO, ON - SEPTEMBER 13: Filmmaker/ Actor Billy Bob Thornton arrives at the "Jayne Mansfield's Car" Premiere during the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival at the Roy Thomson Hall on September 13, 2012 in Toronto, Canada. (Photo by Jemal Countess/Getty Images) (Jemal Countess/Getty)

BEVERLY HILLS -- Oscar-winner Billy Bob Thornton has signed on to star in "Fargo," an FX limited series inspired by the 1996 film.

"Fargo," which begins production in the fall, presents an all-new crime story and will feature no characters from the film. Thornton will play Lorne Malvo, a "rootless, manipulative" man who meets a small town insurance salesman and sets him on a path of destruction. The character is in the same vein as the one Steve Buscemi played in the award-winning film.

"I think people are going to be entranced with that show," FX president and general manager John Landgraf told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour on Friday. "It's really it's own thing but also true to the spirit of the original."

"Fargo" will be executive produced by Joel and Ethan Coen, the brains behind the film. It will run for 10 episodes and will most likely air next spring.

David King: the world needs a 'moon landing' for solar energy

Britain's former chief scientist has challenged governments around the world to find a way of creating a ready flow of cheap solar power over the next 10 years to fight global warming.

Writing in the Financial Times today, Sir David King and co-author Richard Layard, the former founder-director of the London School of Economics' Centre for Economic Performance, warn a collective scientific effort of similar proportions to putting a man on the moon is needed to tackle climate change.

"To defeat the axis of powers the allies developed the atom bomb. When threatened in the cold war, the US sent a man to the moon," the authors write. "When threatened by global warming we surely need a similar effort to save the planet."

King and Layard suggest that by 2025 bulk solar electricity should be supplied commercially at an unsubsidised price on a 24-hour basis, with at least 1GW powering cities in the Americas, Europe and Asia.

The joint project would be open to all G20 countries, and funded either by a carbon tax or governments' research and development budgets. King and Layard say the cost for each country would be 0.05 per cent of annual GDP for 10 years.

"We need a concentrated effort on one source [of energy] that offers the clearest prospect of success," they say. "The collection of solar energy by photovoltaic cells becomes cheaper every day and is already nearly economic in sun-rich environments."

But King and Layard also highlight the need for investment in electricity storage in order to achieve the goal of providing constant solar power.

"This is a far more important issue than putting a man on the moon. It should attract as much attention - and, this time, the attention of every nation. Failure to solve this problem will affect every nation upon earth."

Google Play Edition smartphones start receiving Android 4.3 (updated)

Google Play Edition smartphones start receiving Android 43

If you were wondering just how long it would take the Google Play Editions of the HTC One and Samsung Galaxy S 4 to get Android 4.3, we can now tell you: not long at all. Owners of both devices report that they're receiving over-the-air updates to the new OS. There isn't yet word of any GPE-specific additions, but we'll let you know if there are surprises in store.

Update: AnandTech has noticed a few GPE-specific changes. Most home screen icons appear larger, infrared now works on the HTC One, and Bluetooth-based internet tethering is now an option for the Galaxy S 4.

Phil Dawson discusses Weather.com, compares kicking to golf, and otherwise impresses in press conference

We break down Phil Dawson's press conference following practice. The man entertained us!

A few months back, the 49ers introduced their new kicker Phil Dawson, who took some questions from the media. In that session and a subsequent radio interview, it became clear that Phil Dawson brought a pretty good sense of humor to the table. When it comes to special teams players, they can be great to follow for one of two reasons: either they are incredibly awesome at their job, or they are a little quirky. Some bring both to the table.

In the case of Phil Dawson, we'll hope for the former when the season gets started, but for now, I can say with some certainty that he brings the funny. Here are a few tweets I sent out during his press conference:

Maybe it was just listening to it, or maybe I've just got some kind of weird special teams fetish, but I thought it was funny. One highlight not listed above was hearing his excitement about what free agency was like. Dawson was undrafted in 1998, and he mentioned how he always wondered if the coaches and front office liked him previously, or just figured he was good enough. This year, he was pursued by the 49ers, and he got a kick out of that.

The highlight from the above tweets had to be the random discussion of weather services on the Internet. Back in March, Dawson had said he would spend some time at Candlestick to get a little more prepared for the crazy weather there. Today he said he has made a few trips to the stadium. He does not think it can fully prepare him, but it does help him start to figure things out.

He mentioned several times during the press conference about his use of Weather.com, AccuWeather and WeatherBug. He would not reveal which of the three was most accurate in Cleveland, but he did say he would use all three again here in San Francisco.

Thatcher made secret plans to bring in the military during the miners' strike

A month later she and senior ministers including the chancellor, home secretary, defence secretary and industry secretary agreed to the proposal.

Minutes from their meeting read: "It might be necessary at some stage to examine more radical options for extending endurance, including the use of servicemen to move pithead stocks to power stations by rail and road."

The previously secret documents show the meticulous preparations made by ministers and officials for what they saw as the inevitable confrontation with Mr Scargill and his National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) over pit closures.

Mrs Thatcher had been a minister in Edward Heath's government when it was brought to its knees by miners' strikes in the early 1970s, and early in her premiership she was forced to withdraw plans to shut 23 pits because the Government was not ready to withstand a prolonged strike.

At the start of 1983, ministers were told that power stations had enough stocks of coal to keep operating for about 20 weeks, but MISC 57 warned that much of industry had as little as two weeks worth of coal left.

To improve Britain?s readiness for a mass walkout by miners, power stations were converted to dual-firing so they could run on oil and nearby land was quietly bought up so more coal could be stockpiled.

Nigel Lawson, then the energy secretary, wrote a memo for Mrs Thatcher in January 1983 setting out a detailed strategy for how to defeat the NUM.

He said the miners had shown a ?reluctance? to take industrial action but noted that Mr Scargill was ?by no means a spent force? and would do ?everything he can to foment and escalate disputes?.

Mr Lawson recommended that the Government should press ahead with mass pit closures, accepting the ?near certainty? of a national strike once the NUM realised what was happening, but only after the planned general election that year.

By March 1983, John Vereker, a member of Mrs Thatcher's policy unit who also served on MISC 57, was confident that Britain could cope if the miners halted coal production.

"I am happy to report that this morning we for the first time glimpsed on the horizon the prospect of indefinite endurance, albeit at a very considerable cost for converting the main coal-fired power stations to dual firing," he wrote.

"There is some way to go, but it looks as if we can achieve nine months of endurance at very little cost on top of what we have already incurred: and twelve months' endurance at an additional cost of ?70 million for further coal stocking capacity."

Arthur Scargill is arrested at Orgreave in 1984 during the miners' strike

In the event the military were not used during the bitter miners? strike of 1984 to 1985, which resulted in victory for Mrs Thatcher and became one of the defining events of her time in office.

Take-Two CEO lets loose what's essentially a Red ... - Games Thirst

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick further fueled the fire of a possible Red Dead sequel. Speaking during Take-Two?s Q1 FY14 earnings results last night, Zelnick stated that the Borderlands and Grand Theft Auto publisher?s goal is ?to try to create permanent franchises?. What?s the big deal, I hear you asking?

?Our goal is to try to create permanent franchises, that?s the unique goal in the industry.

Our competitors do not see it that way. Our competitors? view is that our franchise will have a certain life, and at the end of that life, you move onto the next thing, so you better make hay while the sun shines. Our view is to the contrary. The best franchises are permanent franchises.

Outside of our business you can look at James Bond, for example. And it?s been our goal not just to preserve and grow the Grand Theft Auto franchise, but also to build other franchises that we think can be permanent, whether that?s the Red Dead franchise or the Borderlands franchise or the BioShock franchise or others, Civilization, for example.?

There you have it, more work for the rumor mill to process.

Thanks, VideoGamer.com and? Seeking Alpha

?While the possibility of the Fed toning down their view on the economy is high, traders are looking closely for any change in language with regards to tapering its bond purchases,? said Chris Weston, chief market strategist at IG Markets.

Dow Jones Industrial Average /quotes/zigman/627449 DJIA -0.0089% ?futures were up 8 points, or 0.1%, at 15,501 ahead of the Fed?s statement later in the day. Markets were also looking ahead to data on the U.S. economic growth in the second-quarter, with estimates compiled by MarketWatch projecting a 1% expansion, slowing from a 1.8% increase in the first quarter.

In Tokyo, a slew of Japanese results announced after the market?s close on Tuesday influenced share movements during the session.

China, Japan seek to contain island dispute fallout

Japan and China are edging gingerly toward repairing diplomatic relations after Tokyo's highest-ranking career diplomat travels to Beijing on for two days of talks.

Toyota Motor Corp. /quotes/zigman/199438 JP:7203 -1.65% ? /quotes/zigman/199376/quotes/nls/tm TM +1.95% ?dropped 1.7% ahead of its own earnings report Friday. A Nikkei newspaper report it plans to manufacture more than 10 million vehicles worldwide this year.

Elsewhere, China?s Shanghai Composite /quotes/zigman/1859015 CN:SHCOMP +0.19% climbed 0.2%, after the powerful politburo of China?s communist party said late Tuesday it would act to maintain steady growth in the second half of 2013.

Bank of America Merrill Lynch economists led by Ting Lu wrote in a note that unlike the previous government, the politburo didn?t vow to control home prices or to cool the property market, saying instead that it seeks to promote a healthy and stable development of the property sector.

?This message could be interpreted that the new leadership has no intention to take further measures to restrict home demand and tighten financing of the property sector,? Merrill Lynch added.

Chinese property and construction-related shares rallied to lead the advance.

China stocks rise on policy hopes, and Australian shares climb on rate-cut expectations. But Japanese equities fall ahead of the Fed?s policy meeting outcome.

China Cosco Holdings Co. /quotes/zigman/34517 HK:1919 -4.48% ? /quotes/zigman/1875620 CN:601919 -0.37% /quotes/zigman/527749/quotes/nls/cicoy CICOY -19.14% ?fell 4.5% in Hong Kong and slipped 0.4% in Shanghai, after the shipping major estimated narrower losses for the first six months of 2013.

Elsewhere, Australia?s S&P/ASX 200 /quotes/zigman/1653884 AU:XJO +0.10% ?rose 0.1% in Sydney after Reserve Bank of Australia Gov. Glenn Stevens Tuesday said current inflation levels wouldn?t rule out further easing. Those remarks helped the index rebound in the previous session to end flat.
